Can anyone see any issues with fitting a 5 speed 02j EGU gearbox from the 2.0 Gti 8v Golf/Bora onto a 1.8t engine? It seems to be the 'box most commonly available with the 3.9 FD I'm after. I understand I'll possibly have to change the drive flanges from 110mm to 100mm and mess around with mountings (coming from an 02a), but the main uncertainty is the shift tower - is it the early or later 02j type? Maybe it depends on the year of the car. I need to have it rebuilt, fit quaife diff, and use the later 02j cables and shifter, with cable clutch actuator. Grateful for any guidance
Here is a comparison of the gear ratios between the 02J EGU and the 02A CBA gearbox as in your signature. I would say at first glance the EGU gear spacing is more suited to your engine. Others can chime in on the 02J shifter tower and overall speed in gears/rpms etc.
Thank you for posting that up Eddie. Yes, I think that gearset would be pretty good. Nige, I don't know the differences, only that I'm led to believe the later one has the better quality shift, do you agree? May be cobblers. Also that the later one will have the connections to fit the cables I have. I need to do some more digging. If I end up with the earlier version, I'm faced with trying to find a later tower which is a PITA as they're not often found separated from the 'box. Thanks for your input. I was under the impression there was an early/inferior 02j tower, and a later, preferable one. Again, I may be mistaken.
