hi i have a really nice 5 door mk1 no rust real nice interior and paint job
got it cheap from someone who lost interest, i have sourced a mot
failure gti mk1 and wanted do a engine swap, should there be any real
    problems,
and is it really worth it, i have thought that webers will do away with any
extra wiring and have realised that the left engine mount will need to be
moved. what does any one think easy or mission???

if the gti is complete you should be ok. once you've moved the engine mount.

you'll need everything, right back to the petrol tank, but its not gonna be too hard.

the steering rack is also different, so think about that too.

you might have to replace a few things as you see fit whilst you go along, but otherwise you will have everything you need on the donor car.

As GTI says if you have all the bits its just a bit of hard graft, dont
scrap the old car untill you know the new one is all running or you
    will probably need a bit...

There is a FAQ on this which details most of the bits you need.

Get yourself a digital camera and take a shed load of pictures of the gti before you start to strip it.

There is no way you can remember the positions of all the wires and brackets.

like a pratt i bought my digi camera on holiday two weeks after i stripped the gti!!!

Not too bad if you do the swap side by side but if you have any sort of a break between stripping and building again the pics are well handy.

cheers for that, i just needed some moral support!!!! it should be ok, i
took the 1L out last night not to bad, i then have slowly been removing
the bits of the gti engine so it can come out, the FAQ states i need to
move the steering rack, but i have everything off the gti to replace it.

cheers for ideas on digi photos
    sounds a good idea.
i reckon i will stay with the injection system, just link the wires together
    thanks

yup, swap the rack over from the GTI as it holds the gear linkage.

To make the wiring easier, and get the use of the rev counter and all the extra GTI bit, just swap the entire loom over!

While your taking pics, you could post some up in the FAQ, would be very helpfull reference I'm sure.
