If someone please help me, I'm rebuilding the above engine and I think that the big end bearing clearance is too much.
Does anyone knows the standard clearance value? (plastigauge or bore dial)

I can't even find a manual for one of these in AU.
(building one for race, well not much original left)

    So, what clearance you use?

Custom Rods but they told me .0015" on 0w-30, hasn't been run yet
Interesting thing is the mains are non-service... if you take the caps off and the motor is apparently unusable because you cannot re-install with normal workshop tools (Gulp!)

it would be nice to have them.
I assembled the engine as it was, it has 53000km so the bearings should be fine, they had no marks on them.
The only problem was failed tensioner and 8 bent valves.
The engine workshop told me that the gap is normal.

I had rebuild BBZ AUA and other 16v alloy block 1400cc engines and always replaced the mains with no problem so far tigthened them to ~60Nm.

Doesnt appear to be any kind of special installation procedure, though VW say you must match each cap with each conrod and they must be fitted in the same orientation due to the 'cracking' method for splitting the caps off the rods. They mention that if you buy them new sometimes the caps are not fully split, so you have to clamp them in a vice and bash sideways with a plastic hammer to split

anyway here are the clearances from elsawin:
Special tools and workshop equipment required
    - Plastigage

    Procedure
Remove conrod bearing cap. Clean bearing cap and bearing journal.
Place a length of Plastigage corresponding to the width of the bearing on the bearing journal or in the bearing shell.
Fit conrod bearing caps and tighten to 30 Nm without turning bolts further; do not rotate crankshaft.
    Remove conrod bearing cap again.
Compare width of Plastigage with measurement scale.

    Radial clearance:
    - New: 0.02 ... 0.06 mm.
    - Wear limit: 0.09 mm.

    Renew conrod bolts
