    1984 1.3 8v HK engine
    2E3 Pierburg carburettor

Problem = Anything other than 1st gear or very gentle load/pedal in 2nd results in the engine shaking and spluttering violently, bringing the speed down to a crawl. The problem seems to variable between crippling and almost drivable but very shaking / lumpy.

Can't be carb icing as it happens almost as soon as you pull away, but it does have the symptoms of carb icing... hmm

I have tried 1/3 can of carb cleaner, no success there. I have also tried blowing hard down the fuel pipe incase there was a blockage starving the fuel at higher loads when more fuel is needed. With fuel cap openI could hear the air bubbles being blown out so that rules that one out?

What else? I have the original carb (faulty unit so can't switch it fore the current carb) that could donate bits.

    Help appreciated!

Sounds like far too much/little fuel, may be a blockage in the main jet or choke mechanism stuck?
Just guessing really, EZ Pete is the man when it comes to Pierburgs

Is this when hot/cold or just any time?

    any time

I'd say worse when warm although not 100% sure

choke flap works fine, opens up as the coolant temp rises

    flange?

I do like that word.. but elaborate Pete lol

would flange leaking = perfect idle & works ok-ish until warmed up?

    thanks

Possibly, I guess. When idling the car's generally stationary, so the carb won't be rocking about like it will under acceleration or cornering. Plus the rubber of the flange will get more flexible when warm, so allowing more movement.

Easy to check out, just rock the carb around when it's idling and listen for changes in running. Try when cold, and when up to temp.

    Just a guess really.

    And it's a funny word. :)

I'm wondering if what i'm getting is actually a high load misfire & that my coil needs replacing

the car has a new distributer, plugs, leads, but coil is ancient...

sounds very much like a vacuum leak.

have some twin Weber 40's jetted for and manifold that would fit your engine if you're interested :)

Like pete said, just give the carb a gentle wobble and see how much play is in it and whether it makes a difference...

took a work car home for now, ordered a carb flange/ gasket from gsf (non in stock at present) + coil (might aswell)

PM how much for the 40s and manifold, this is only my runabout while i'm tinkering with my other mk2 BUT I could be tempted, and you can't be too far away for collection, based in London

I've fitted another 2E3 carb... and the problem remains...

guess that rules the carb out

Whoops sorry never saw this. Based in Central London WC1E if you want to collect. It would be 10 off the figure I sent you.
