   the only trouble with the 3a block is actually finding one, as they're pretty hard to get these days. just go with the mk3 2.0 block instead, will fit perfectly fine just use a standard 8v gti manifold and downpipe. no need to mess about with 4 branch as the original stuff flows plenty well enough
