I would say that it relates to a leak on the secondary air injection system, on the pump the rivets break which causes it to leak air, you can repair these. Have a listen to see if its noisey

    Hi there,

In a morning is is quite noisy for a couple of minutes. It sounds like a vacume sucking the air through and then it turns off after a coupple of minutes...

The secondary air injection system is used to bring the catalytic converter upto temp faster when cold hence why it switches off after a few minutes.

At least if you can hear it working thats less things you have to check, I would definately start by checking for leaks from the pump and pipework though

Thanks for the info, I will start with checking the pipes and then take it from there... hopefully it will just be a spit pipe...

Will keep posting to let people know how I get on if they happen to have the same issue.

    Thanks

Hi there, yes so I had a look today and the rivits have broken on the pump so it's leaking air.

How much is a new pump? and which type do I need? does anyone have a link?

If it's really expensive I could drill some holes and use bolts to fix the existings one...

someone else who had the same issue:

I just fixed the same thing on my friend's 1.8 '04 GTI. What I found in forums is that the aluminum rivets holding the pump together stretch, and break causing an air leak. The pump will keep running. Hers did it the entire time the engine was running. I pulled the pump, drilled the rivets, and replaced them with $12 worth of bolts/nuts. Fixed the problem instantly.
