is it possible to run the 150 bhp engines up to 300 bhp with mods.

there's one in a current mag running 270 bhp.

i ask this as it will be cheaper and easier to source a 150 lump rather than a 225 one. i guess it would be more expensive getting that power from the 150 than it would be the 225??

    opinions please :)

In last month's "The Golf" mag there's an article showing what each type of engine can do...

I think the limit for an early 150PS is about 250-270.

But it would be easier and cheaper in the long term to get a 225 and pay a little more initially then less on mods. I.e chip it to 250 - 270. Rather than having to replace the turbo on a 150 to get the same power...

the limit on the early 150ps- using the ko3 turbo is around 220-230 isn't it, the ko3s being around 250, and the ko4 turbo around 290-300?!

    roughly....

could you not just whack on a k04 to the 150 lump and get a similar sort of power.

iirc that they have different valve sizes amongst other minor differences?

my preference is to get a 225 enigne but i am just looking at other options

yes 150 can go to 400bhp with a big enough turbo, but it needs a good map as it has a slightly higher compression so more likely to knock

Not forgetting the different intercoolers the 1.8Ts come with and the different manifolds required for the different turbos.

Dahlback can get your 150 AGU engine up to approx 700BHP!!

Mind you, it'll cost about 10 grand!!

and to boot very unreliable, i would bother modding a 20vt over 250bhp, useless they are at high boost

what would be left of the original 150bhp engine though, just to get it to silly power figures?? you would have to do all sorts to the pistons and crank so i reckon if you are gona go for big power then go for the 225 engine.

I'm not gona go for more than 220bhp, everyone seems to have traction problems and my car is a daily driver for me...

interesting point about the traction.

i've got a bit of competition in my friends with one mk2 having a vr put in as i write while another friend with a mk3 has just taken out his supercharged vr and is in the process of refitting a turbo'd vr. [:s]

nothing like a bit of friendly rivalry is there ?

My daily drive is a 290 brake 20vt. Under 'normal' driving conditions lack of traction isn't a problem.

i like to fettle in the odd traffic light gp, and im sure a mk2 20vT with 220bhp would be enough to see off a few people.

    Anybody care to comment?

I'm sure it would be enough for that ;) but when you meet a scooby on the open road you'll wish you had more

aye, having near on 300bhp is quite pleasant.
