I was driving along the motorway today in a 2000 X-reg Seat Alhambra and all of a sudden I smoked out the M56 with a mass of white smoke. I got recovered off the RAC who dropped the car off at my house. I had to reverse it into a space and again white smoke covered my street. The oil level was low and the coolant temperate had recently been dropping from an indicated 90deg to the resting place on the needle then jumping back up to 90deg. Any ideas?
Ian, tough one least possible fault could be, Temp sender feckek and left suddenly alltered the setting to cold settings , riching it up you'd be lucky if it's just that, How's the water level? Best try to take off part of the exhaust, bottom subframe ( around the cat), seal in the turbo bursts and spits the oil into exhaust which gives a white smoke as heated and blown though, rather than burnt though combustion causing a blue tint
The water level is fine but I didn't remove the cap incase it emptied under pressure. The oil is clean. The some looks white but could be blue tinged. I'll have a closer look tonight. Cheers.
bet in alhambra turbo is a right pig to get too, everything on those cars is hidden about 4 foot under the scuttle...lol
Does the car still run ok, or have you not driven it enough to tell? If it sounds like it's missing, you might have holed a piston, but hopefully not!
Remove one of the boost pipes, good chance it’s the turbo, inside of the boosts pipes will be wet with oil, slight film of oil is ok though. Try and drop a boost pipe off as low as you can, like the bottom of the intercooler, see if the oil runs out
Definately sounds like turbo seals to me... I have some fancy tracer fluid that you put in the oil, run the engine, then inspect inside all the pipework with a UV light that will show up the fluid, if it has passed the seals. Have you a UV light?
No, I dont have a UV light. It was ****ing it down tonight so I didn't have a chance to look. I'll get it on some axle stands and look in the boost pipes and the exhaust. I'll also have a look at the smoke again to see if I can tell the colour a bit better. The mileage on it is 122,000 and it did seem a bit rattly thar morning when it was cold.
it sounds the same as what happened in my non pd golf the oil seals went in that all i will say is clean your intercooler thoroughly before you use the car i didnt and the engine ran on the oil in the intercooler and the engine literally killed it self
it is the same what code is your engine is it AJM the 130bhp may fitt as well but you would need a diffrent boost pipe to the intercooler i got one complete for 70 with 60k on it have it as a spare they are plenty on ebay new or extange ones frrom vag are a bit dear
my car is AJM i think the turbo 038253019C it looks like this the spare is 038253016F and looks like this
It looks like I need a Garrett GT1749V (Seat part number 038253019N). Its fitted on loads of different cars but has millions of different part numbers even accross the VW range. Surely its the same turbo? Any idea what the difference is between the GT1749V and the GT1749VA?

my seat ibiza one was a special, think because the manifold was part of it. although the garrett part number was same as audi/vw etc
