Hi all... have a little problem developed a noise from the gearbox side of my vr i've had it diagnosed by total vag in leighton buzzard and they rekon its the cam chain tensioners broken down and is causing the chain to slap or rattle, can anyone describe what this would sound like at all and how big a job it is??

I need a new clutch aswell so thinking of pulling it off the road to do both at the same time myself, im pretty competent at most mechanical stuff i've done engine changes gearbox changes but not to a vw!! usually fords and vauxhalls (excuse my french)!!!

Will the chain need changing aswell or just the tensioner if it is that??

    Cheers dubbers[:D]

err, I can't be blunt enough about this one

DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE AGAIN OR YOU RISK THE CAM CHAIN JUMPING

box off, clutch and FW off. inlet manifold and rocker cover off. engine covers off.have fun.

Buy the peter russek manual off ebay, don't pay more than a tenner for it.

Best way of describing it is like ball bearings in a blender. If your gonna change anything then you might as well change the lot of it saves having to take it all to bits again.

And whether its simple is all relative really.......if you know what your doing then its straight forward.
If you have never done it before then do some reading up about it as its quite involved really.
But you will have the satisfaction of knowing what to do in the future, most places charge between 500 and 700 to do it. Thats using VW specialists, VW prices might double or treble that.

Ahh def the cam chain problem then can even hear it when you start it you can hear them grindin as it turns over if you follow!! never really worked on a dub i mean i've done me suspension exhaust wheel bearings i've even gotta weld the rear foot wells up as they've rotted around the rubber bungs, but i'l try anythin really the company who diagnosed it quoted me 850 for the cam chain change and clutch all at the same time as apparently they're the same side but jus been lookin on euro car parts and the parts are only 180 to 200 quid so 650's a bit expensive in labour charges surely??[:s]

it's a very labour intensive job. it'll tak you a full day even if you know exactly what you're doing.

If it's a 2.8 then i'd just go for a new engine - 1450 exchange from VEGE or around 1900 from VAG, no point messing around if it's done over 100k and rattles
