Basically i would like to fit a set of 16" 2 piece BBS RX2 wheels to my MK3.

I understand that the 'proper' ones are 7J and not 6.5J - the narrower ones being Polo or Mk4 golf.

However, if i can only find the narrow 6.5J, what size tyres should i run?

By my calcs a 195/45x16 should be close to the standard 205/50x15, but a 205/40x16 is also close.

Can anyone advise what is period correct?

Also, will a 40mm drop on springs be ok?

(i've always previously run coilovers, super low, with streched tyres etc but i now have a young daughter and need to make the car practical and safe!!)

Both are a 'proper' wheels just different sizes, the 7J (RS722) being available on the Anniversary with 215/40x16 tyre.

I have heard that the 6.5J may foul the brake caliper on the Mk3 but I can never work this out as to why as 288mm brakes were available on the Mk4 unless they were 312mm? Polo versions of the same era were 4 stud (RS772).

If you were closer to me you'd be welcome to have a look at my collection of 7J versions, one set I need to get rid of.

Current the set I have on my Anniversary have 195/45x16 tyres over the 7J rim. For me it's very borderline being too narrow but they came with the wheels and have good tread. You'd be pretty fine with the sizes you quoted; I think the 6.5J came with a 205 tyre and will give you better rim protection if you know what I mean.

I have a 35 to 40 mm drop on mine and there is loads of room inside the arch.

I have just picked up a 6.5j set dirt cheap as it will give me something to do getting them split. I was pondering the same, 195/45 or 205/40 as one is slightly over the 195/50/15 size and the other slightly under. But one has slightly more sidewall and the other more rim protection lol. I would have liked to find a set of 7j but not many cheap sets Around.

I've got a 295/45 on the 7" ones on my Mk2 so I'd think the 195/50 or 205 would be better for the Mk3. I'd get which ever is the more common and so cheaper size.

A guy called Greig Ross just posted a set of the 7" wide ones on the Club GTI Sales page.

They have decent Toyo 215/40 x16's on them

I paid 50 for my mk4 wheels and an extra half inch is not worth 400 to me lol. Unless it was for the big fella!!!
