hi mate are you sure that your inlet manifold gasket is good it sounds like to me that you have a vacum leak between the carbs and the engine hense not drawing the fuel in

It'll struggle to start if you've blocked the breathers on the top of the carb.

Also, could you be out 180d on the timing?

    hi

none of the breathers are blocked, n7ndo checked the plugs and timing for me twice incase it was 180 out

from all the suggestions its pointing to one thing, my manifold... im gonna have a look at this one day this week, hopefully if i tighten it up it may cure it, if not i will get it skimmed as i do remember it banannad out a little when welded, but bolted down ok...

north london, bit far too come and offer assistance, but i think nando knows his stuff! If the manifold is letting air in then this will be a factor.

dizzy timing could not be set to the right position due to the two bolts holding it down needed to be swapped to their other positions,

and i thought i had it in a good place...

    fired straight up

thank you all for your time and suggestions

glad you are up and running, are you happy with how it runs?

what coolant flange did you use to allow the top hose to miss the manifold?

lol, always check the basics, i learnt alot from this thread anyway tbh.

they need setting up properly as it runs like poo atm, theres a rolling road round the corner to where i have the car, when its ready il prob just pop it in there. i havent made the water flange yet as i cant leave it on long enough to try and improve things, i purchased some flat plate and the correct tubing out of stainless to make the flange.

Don't be booting it until you get it tuned up properly or there's a chance you'll cause damage with over/under fuelling and the likes!!

been a while since i got it running, still haven't set it up, all iv'e done is taken it for an mot which it passed!

looking at taking it to a rolling road but to save me some time there what have you guys set your floats to on r1 carbs?

ie from the top of the needle which setting have you moved the circlip to?

it will probably need adjusting when on the rolling road but id rather its done now incase i loose a circlip there or something silly like that, plus the rolling road is a long drive away and dont want to do damage.

    thanks

on a 1.8 with 272 cams mines set up with a re-profiled needle, 165 main jets, 3 turns on part throttle mixture and in 1st clip on the needle.

she runs rich at the bottom and lean at the top. perfect at mid range. we only had an hour or so to get it working so left it like this for the time being. to get it running right we'll need between 175-185 main jets and possibly smaller pilot jets or a re-profiled needle to make her less rich at the bottom.
