    Hi All
I hope everyone is doing well?
I was looking for some advice regarding the power steering on my mk2 golf 16v if possible please?
The power steering pump was removed a few years ago now and i actually prefer it without it due to the ongoing issues i had with it initially and it feels good without it.
My problem is that it will be going in for an MOT soon and i am worried it may fail the MOT due to the fact that it is supposed to have power steering? Is this something to be concerned about and is there anything i can do to avoid having to re-fit all of the components for the MOT?
I was also wondering if it is bad for the steering rack to run it without power steering?
I am under the impression that i should have fitted a non-power steering rack after the removal of the power steering pump etc?
Is there anything i can do to avoid taking the engine out.... again?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice it is much appreciated.
    Kind Regards
    Calvin

Really you should have the non PAS rack, or remove all the hydraulics from the current one.

I didn't think changing a rack was an engine out job?

Changing to a manual rack will need a different steering shaft and gaiter.
    Possibly steering arms too, iirc.

    Hi Tristan
Thank you for your swift reply.
Thats good news that it is not an engine out job.
So if I was to remove the hydraulics are there plugs or something I can use to block up the holes that will be left?
Also what are the dangers of running the power steering rack without power steering? Does this result in damaging the existing rack?
Oh and do you think it would fail the mot with having it removed?
    Thanks Again
    Kind Regards
    Calvin

I can't comment about the MOT, I don't live in England or the UK.

Removing the hydraulics is more than a pipework issue, its the valves etc internally.
But for now, you could just remove the pipes and put in some rubber or plastic grommets.

Thank you Tristan you advice is much appreciated. I must apologise in advance for my ignorance but every day is a school day when it comes to mk2s .
I will get all evidence of power steering removed and look into getting a non PAS rack.
Thanks again dude hope all is well.
    Kind regards
