I`m really hoping a lot of these steps make sense once you`ve poured the metal lol

Brian, have you got an engine simulation program for the head design? I'd be fascinated to see what you come up with. I guess it depends what it's for/ rev ranges etc and whether the rest of it will hold together to make the most of the revs.

Sadly every one of these steps are necessary :o - If any of them were not I wouldn't be doing them lol It'll all make sense dont worry,

@ Prof, I have a few sims run yep - also have a few port models done for air speeds/cfm inputs. The key is in the short side radius, water cooling on the exhaust side, and also combustion chamber compactness. Everything else just gets built around those and the head studs. Initially Im running the head with solid lifters in bolt in billet aluminum lifter carriers(like the m54)as I feel it gives nice flexibility. Down the line I want to run the head with finger followers once the design is proven - this will mean a different mould insert for the top of head to make way for finger placing but everything else remains much the same bar the cams of course. The block will be 'standard' vw with a billet crank, pankl rods(got already), and probably Mahle pistons. The head will be running DelWest components. Cams will be made by Newman or Piper - simply because they are companies with faces that you can meet, and they will listen.

Thats all Im going saying about the head in here as I want to keep this thread clean lol Im not sure yet how I will document it - doing a live thread takes a lot of effort - even though making a head is pretty simple pattern-wise compared to this intake at hand. The other options are giving it to a magazine(not enough space) or write a book on the making of it(might finally go insane doing this) So I dont know yet how Ill show the build.

    Brian,

If you want to do a book or a series of articles, I would be happy to help in the writing / editing etc. Would be an awesome project. [I was a professional scientific writer for a couple of years].

Nige, I didnt mean it that way - I love sharing info, but on the head project the said info is large and there's only so many hrs in the day to do everything. Ill have a think about how it could be done after this one.

Cripes almighty....more eyes! I really hope it pours ok now lol (Hello USA folks!)

Still no sand but the core glue and iso-propyl alcohol for thinning mould wash did show up. Its not the normal iso-al, most iso-al is 20% water, since water will dissolve the moulds a bit it needs to be nearly pure. I managed to track down 99.9% pure in a gallon tin - I reckon the .1% is FEAR as its a small bit scary looking at it - and smelling it has to be said. Still not as scary as Nitric acid though, that still holds number one in terms of ''Fearful Chemical Un-boxing Experiences'' so far.

I really really hope the sand shows tomorrow and that its not raining for the unloading.
