RobT ran 17s on the race car, so they must work.

Here's mine with the 17s I mentioned above.

    Here's why I didn't keep them:

Too much arch work, and those are only 610mm in diameter. 205/40/17s are around 600mm, everything else is around the 625 and higher mark, so very limited in choice. Lots of work required for not much gain.

would cutting the metal work away and using some G60 or even just 90 spec arches not sort that?

cracking wheels just too big to fit

All depends on tyre size not much point in going up a size or width in wheels if you can't get the best size tyre to fit under the arch's
205's rub depending on how low you are so no point in fitting 195 tyres to 8" rims other than looks

i might try and get my brakes at 315mm so i can run 16's for the road and have a set of 17's for the track

All depends nothing, as you can get the 16" tyres and width of rims et etc to suit standard or rolled arches which apples to 15" also
fitting 195 tyres to 8" rims running the car silly low is just gay38.com carpark drivers.....fit da bags while your there boy [:@)]

My car runs 16x7 et34 with 205 45 and no rubbing and lets me run larger brakes with good cooling round them ;)

Make's me laugh looking at the rear of a golf with daft off-set rims that are to wide sitting to far out lol

205/215 on the 16's as the pro race 1.2s only come in 7 wide, which is why i was considering the 17's as they come in 7 to 9 wide a a few in between. Ill be using G60 arches and wont be running silly low

16x7 et34 - is that std or g60 arches, the 16x7 i was looking at (I'm widetrack too) was ET15, mainly to clear the porsche brakes

I run G60 arches and 305 brembos with no problems ...wide track with Et15 wouldn't be me ;)
if you look at my build and how my wheels sit at 7" et34, et15 will sit another 19mm out from that if they are 7"
then you say yours is wide track also ontop of that.

But what tyres will you run?
I think there's only Toyo and Kumho in 17, not even sure if there are any available in 16.
