Guys I've got a BAM conversion brewing slowly and the donor is a TT quattro which means the gearbox is no use for 2wd.

Furthermore the bell housing's cracked so it's kinda elementary anyways.

I was scoping a few different conversions at Inters show and noticed what looked like a stock 020 gearbox mated to a 20VT lump of some flavour or other.

Can peeps chime-in with their opinion / experience on the weapon of choice.

    It's destined for a Mk2 GTi Golf 1989.

    MTIA !!

Mk3 16v box would be your best starting point. Cda or dpa codes. There are many threads about this.

Depends on the code though. As some are 3.9 FD to go with the larger wheels of the mk4. And that would be too short.

Yes 5 speed. If choosing a mk4 02j check the ratios.

Depends what you like really , i have alway been a fan of a low ratio box`s , and a mate of mine is a fan of the opposite end of the spectrum using a TDI box , the Mk3 16v box is somewhere in the middle i reckon

    FD 3.94 AGC
    FD 3.67 CDA i think

mine is 300hp and his is about 420hp and he preferred that to keep the thing on boost having tried a lower ratio box and found it was all no boost , boost over and repeat

I do track and sprint driving and prefer a lower ratios , so using a Passat AGC in mine with a extra cog ( quaife ) 6speed , i don`t use it on the road

After a bit of digging (i note how poor the info on gearboxes is on the web).....
I see the polo gearbox is an 02R.
This is an mq250 series box which is rated 250nm.

    Should an 02j off a mk4 golf tdi PD130 6spd work?
The lower fd ratio due to bigger mk4 wheels countered by the higher
ratios of the cogs of the tdi.
Also the box should be mq250/300/350 so stronger??

    Is my logic sound?

You need to know the box code. Not sure its a straight forward swap. May involve welding up the chassis leg to fit a mount.

Ok well Ive secured the 02R from the polo Gti but also have the
    option of an ERF 02M 6speed from a tdi pd130 mk4 golf.

You should now put the info into a calculator to see revs/speed per gear etc.

Hi bill. Long time no speak.
Didnt bump into you at inters but Mr whitrow said you were there saturday?

Those TT lightweight rims are ok. The NSF one has a good gash on the edge however.
Id say it was weldable but youd lose the polished lip.

Anyone know what power a typical remapped BAM would make?

    260 ish?
