Let me explain, I run a twin tank set up on my mk3 tdi....I covered just over 1200 miles and only used 20litres of diesel (to purge the system of veg il at the end of runs, ready to start on diesel), so 1200/4.4 gallons=272mpg lol

28 of diesel lasts me five weeks

He runs it on waste veg oil. With veg oil setups you still need to start the car using diesel, so you run two tanks; one diesel, one veg oil.

To "prime" the system for its next start, it's best to run the last few miles before shutting off (getting home, to shops or whatever) on diesel.

Since the diesel is used very sparingly, the effective "diesel mpg" is very high... ;)

The pump will end up knackered if you were to use waste oil that hadn't been properly processed to get rid of all particles/contaminants. If done correctly the oil is very clean and has no ill effects on the pump.
