    hi,
im having a couple of issues arrising in my 89 mk2 8v, and i want to have a look into the before they get worse.

when at low revs it has faultered a few times,i dipped clutch and gave it a blip and it carried on. it has stalled at junctions.

also the revs can rise on their own when moving slowly.

im not too hot at diy mechanics, and this is my first m2 after a having a mk3.
but want to see if theres anything simple i should try before i take it to a garage if it gets any worse.

    any ideas?? ta [:*:]

Check for any leaks or splits in ALL vac hoses and fuel pump/filter. also the ISV (Idle stabilisation valve) can cause big idle probs, soak it in wd40 or swap it out if you have a friend with another golf. check dizzy cap and rotor arm too, Im sure some more knowledgeable peops will be along to help.

hmm.. im gonna take it to a local vw specialist i think.. (aint tried them yet)

    one more thing though,>

since the weekend it wont start (turns over but wont catch) unless i put the clutch in, and then it starts straght away !

this seems v.strange to me.. is this a sign of anything? it not faultering as much now either.. hmm weirdness! lol..

any ideas?? before i go to this garage that is new to me..

that is odd! only starts when you disengage the clutch!
i would just take the breather and inlet pipes off and clean them and the ISV with carb/injector manifold cleaner. it worked for me just last week.

Bizarre, but check the earth strap from the battery to the gearbox... take the connection off the gearbox end and clean the contacts (sandpaper or a file).

Take your ISV off and soak it in petrol or paraffin overnight... might well solve your idle / cut out problem. You don't need to be a mechanical genius to do that.

Worth having it checked over by a specialist anyway, if you've just bought the car, but why pay someone else to do what you can easily do yourself?
