How close should these gears be??

Ie what rev drop would you expect if shifting from say 5000rpm in 4th to 5th???

Mine seems to hardly drop any, less than 500 rpm, prob nearer 200rpm between them, feckin weird [:s]

Right, i have a theory, how about if the gearbox had been swapped for a 4+E, but the gti 5th gear had been installed.

That would give 4th and 5th very similar ratio's wouldnt it, seeing as the 4+E 4th is virtually the same as the gti 5th???

And it seems to have the same in gear mph/100rpm as my driver box's used to........

Sounds like you've hit the nail on the head there andy. My 8v box will do 110mph off the rev limiter (6700rpm), I take it yours pulls much more than this? i'll do a test at 3000rpm for you tommorow if you like...

Well i've seen 120mph in 4th with this box, in 5th at 600 rpm its an indicated 125mph - which is standard gti spec aint it., around 21/22mph / 1000rpm

Yup, thats right, mine goes off the clock at 6000rpm in 5th so thats definately an 8v GTi 5th gear you've got in a 4+E box.

Damn weird, car goes like feck in the first 4 gears though, so its not too big a problem, it jus like havin a 4 speed box though.

Swappin in a new 5th gear is easy aint is seein as its at the end of the stack??

I wanna fit the driver 5th again from my other box, dont want to swap box's cos this one doesnt crunch in 2nd.
