My 8v GTI has been stood for 2 years without being started. The starter motor was stuck solid and would not free up despite all the usual tricks Fitted a new starter but it still wont turn over. I get clicking and buzzing behind the dash when turning the key. The ignition switch is brand new. Dash lights up etc. I get the following readings on a multi-meter: 10.6v across the disconnected freshly charged battery terminal to terminal - I'm starting to think the battery is a goner? I read that it should be 12v+ 10.6v at the starter motor +12v terminal - the other end of the red lead from the battery Between 6-7v on the starter switch lead when the key is turned (0v with ignition off) About 0.2v at the switched terminal of the starter when the key is turned (0v with ignition off) I thought the starter motor would at least do something with 10.6v or is there a reason the starter will not do anything with that weak output?
Cheers for the replies guys. I don't have a set of leads to hand but I can get my hands on a battery dirt cheap, so I'm gonna replace that and try again.
New battery and it started first turn of the key, cheers guys. Discovered the rad fan's a bit ****ed
