My 8v GTI has been stood for 2 years without being started.

The starter motor was stuck solid and would not free up despite all the usual tricks

Fitted a new starter but it still wont turn over. I get clicking and buzzing behind the dash when turning the key. The ignition switch is brand new. Dash lights up etc.

I get the following readings on a multi-meter:

    • 10.6v across the disconnected freshly charged battery terminal to terminal - I'm starting to think the battery is a goner? I read that it should be 12v+
    • 10.6v at the starter motor +12v terminal - the other end of the red lead from the battery
    • Between 6-7v on the starter switch lead when the key is turned (0v with ignition off)
    • About 0.2v at the switched terminal of the starter when the key is turned (0v with ignition off)

I thought the starter motor would at least do something with 10.6v or is there a reason the starter will not do anything with that weak output?

That's too low for the battery. If you've charged it and that's it's max you have a faulty cell.

Cheers for the replies guys. I don't have a set of leads to hand but I can get my hands on a battery dirt cheap, so I'm gonna replace that and try again.
