I have fitted a gearbox from a 1.8T golf, code EVS,

When I drove it the other day for the first time I found it would not stay in 3rd gear when I engaged the clutch unless I held it tight.

If I hold it in 3rd and engage the clutch it will stay there.

At first I thought it was adjustment but it goes into all other gears without any problems and I have tried to adjust it so the gear throw is at it maximum but still no joy and it now has problems selecting reverse as it misses the gate.

Without the engine running, I put it in 3rd and then checked if I could push it any further manually under the bonnet but it seems to be fully engaged.

when I got it I checked the oil and found it very low so topped it up, so I know there is enough oil in it now

Is there something I'm missing or is it fubar'd ? :(
