Does anyone run an ABF on Carbs in a mk1 or mk2??

I have stumbled across a cheap 78K mile unit that could be a viable alternative to x-flow head & T/Bs on my car..

Trouble is it has no loom or gearbox, hence I thought run it on carbs using my existing 8v box with ATB diff etc etc....

Was just interested in possible power/torque figures with standard or otherwise head/cams & running Twin 45s..!!

Ive done a search & I think its viable, as long as I use mk2 mounts/brackets & my 8v box rebuilt with an ATB diff & uprated clutch...

Just wondered how running carbs affects the use of the ABF loom? Id be happy to ditch the injection for a bit of extra poke & no clearance issues, but im unsure how this affects the wiring/running...

Chris, i would really suggest getting hold of a 2Y gearbox that works and having that re-built with a diff in... the extra spline is worth having for the larger clutch and the extra grief it will take.

PM me if you would like directing to a cheaper re-build than any of the specialists can offer.

    2Y is a Mk2 16v gearbox.

Auto T fitted the engine in mine, as well as thousands of service receipts before i had it.

    Ok...

    So far I have sourced:

    1) The ABF (minus loom and box) from a Toledo
    2) A set of rebuilt 40s...

What else do I need apart from a rebuilt 2Y box, ATB & stronger clutch. I can use my existing vibra mounts I take it..Im thinking along the lines of the electrical side of things...

Im guessing my 2E 4 branch will need replacing with an ABF jobbie too [:^(]

Will 40's be enough for an ABF? Thinking about how they like to breathe and what it'll be like if you head/cam/manifold it....

Good Point...Im a little bit in the dark when it comes to 16v fuelling/heads/cams etc etc

Will I need the ABF loom & ECU too even if running carbs??

I wouldn't have thought so... but then again i'm not sure whats involved in the wiring of the ABF -> Digi 8v.. never mind adding carbs.

All i know about 16v fuelling is:

    Vince sorts the fueling
    Dave does heads
    Cams are shite

I need a 16v Daddy to take me under his wing & give me an idea of what I need & what it will cost..

Im either looking at 2L 16v ABF on Carbs (of some description) with flowed head, 4 branch & rebuilt box with ATB & sorted clutch...

    OR...

Pack C x-flow Beetle 8v head with Schrick 276 cam & hyd lifters again running Carbs to be bolted on to my engine along with rebuilt box/ATB & possibly coilovers....

What should my budget be do you all think??

ABF - whatever you are paying for one
    Head - 300
4 Branch - whatever TSR charge (or a 2nd hand one)
    Re-built box + ATB - 700ish
    Clutch - 70 > 300

40s aren't big enough...Carbs on the stock motor won't do much, although people that have them will probably tell you they do

    LMAO

If your's has 175BHP, it must be one of the exceptions that's actually SET UP PROPERLY, rather than those who bolt them onto the motor as they arrive and think it sounds good, so must go harder
