    Hi,
Broke a drive shaft on my mk3 1.8t.

Go to 6 speed gearbox if you havent done it already ! I too broke inner driveshaft ball cage but at over 700Nm and 360 Bhp on a hard launch !

I not long ago had my o2a 5 speed rebuilt with a lsd and not ready to change that yet ha

that’s a lot of torque! I’m not even half that.

I remember a few years ago on Instagram seeing someone posting something about upgraded vr6 one I think, but no longer have insta. Even if I did I have no idea how to find it.

A erf/drw or eff gearbox from a mk4 tdi will be the best next thing ! All you need is a new gearbox mount and modified driveshafts ! On a plus note you get an extra gear for motorway drive/fuel economy and higher top end speed ! It’s common in s4/rs4 b5 to fit the DQS/DQT 2.5 tdi Quattro gearbox to get the max speed to over 200 mph.

Can you use a stock gearbox mount?

I had the 5th gear swapped out for one better suited for motorway driving which helped keep the noise down a little.

Reading about j and r on eBay, driveshaft specialist but such mixed reviews, and they are a fraction of the price of others.
At this point I think replace the inner blown joint and try again I guess

hmm. makes me think manufacturing defect or something, guess they were out of warranty? were they definitely correct part number to suit your wishbone setup, though usually if theres a problem there its the CV joints which fail rather than the shaft itself

    Yes out of warranty unfortunately.
Yes, it was the inner cv joint, passenger side.

You might be right tho. I had my box rebuilt by Martin, and I noticed a whine at very light throttle, only in 5th. I asked him and he said more likely bearing or cv.
Wheel bearing seemed okay, and nothing I could see wrong with the cv. I guess there was a error from the factory?
I’ve got new skf joint to go back on just need the time to get on it now

I had a driveshaft break on me due to being slightly longer, the engine was a swapped 1.9 tdi with a mk3/4 5 speed gearbox. I had to buy the correct driveshaft and the right inner gearbox output flange and rebuild from scratch ! I have no problems anymore.
On the other mk2 with pd 150 engine and 6 speed gearbox I kept breaking inner driveshaft ball cage, however o have had no solution to this issue so far so I had to limit the torque and try not to floor it hard in low gears !
