Advice needed - can anyone help? I am actually posting on behalf of my mechanic who is not very computer friendly. I have a Golf GTI 16V, 64k miles, G reg MK2. It has been idle for a while and has suffered slightly from it with a fair amount of salt damage as it has travelled to the Alps for a few winters. The engine has been cleaned off which has made it look like a completly different engine, but the following problems persist (as given by my mechanic so apologies if vague): <ul>[*]The engine will not tick over properly unles it is above 3k revs[*]There is a misfire and backfire[/list] All the smaller componants have been checked so we are thinking it might be a larger part problem. Can anyone be of help. Please email me directly if you wish. Ideall my mechanic would like to discuss this with someone on the phone. Edited by: MarkGIbbins
I dont mean to sound flipant but you could always take it to another specialist VW mechanic, if i was paying for somebody to sort the car i would rather they knew what they were doing! Sorry that obviously doesnt help !
Agree with comment, but as the car was inherited, i do not want to spend a lot of money doing it up as the rest of the car is mint. the guy looking at it is not charging anything. we are trying to diagnose at this stage and if anyone on here can help with that, i will then decide if it is a VW specialst that will need to do the work or not. Free car and free mechanic lucky or what. I had a similar problem ie not ticking over and feeling very hesitant until you reved it, turned out to be the plug on the hall sender. Only found out after fitting a new dizzy at 80 (but that leaked oil anyway). Try a search on the old forum !
was that 80 for a distributor on an exchange basis?? i need one for my valver but at the moment it hasnt got one as i bought the engine without the dizzy. i'm fitting the engine in this weekend and need a dizzy asap, but im gettin quotes of 130 upwards!!
Yes the dizzy was 80 exchange from Euro car parts, in return i got a brand new bosch unit. I thaught that was quite good as ive heard people on this pay 80 for the hall sender and that is part of the dizzy !
Idle stabilization valve and the hall sender which is attach to the distributor seems to on the Fritz.
what about maybe the spark plugs breaking down the 16 valver is notorious for eating plugs after about 5k miles.just a thought
Start with a basic service - plugs, rotor arm, dizzy cap, oil & filters - if you haven't done it already. Then make sure the cam timing and ignition timing are right. After that, start thinking about changing major components such as the dizzy.
