Hi all, so I've been photographing a few parties recently and I've had a big problem.

Using a Canon EOS 400D, I've been using an external flash (Opteka version of the 430EX flash) and the problem I have is that if I'm in a dark place and the camera needs to autofocus, it'll use a burst of flash to focus correctly. When using the external flash, it doesn't use that to get some light to focus the camera..

Meaning it struggles massively trying to autofocus in the dark!

The last two times, I've had to resort using the internal flash on the camera.

Any ideas how I could solve this? :)

I'm guessing that the external flash doesn't have a built in AF illuminator?

It has a red AF-Assist beam, but it's pretty useless really!
