Sorry got my wires crossed with another 20v that let go, but i think my logic wasn't just from the angle of engine Knock but Engine Noise that is detected.

What Head studs are you running now Bill.

That is true for some cars, BM m3, etc. However experience shows that VW's until relatively recently at least, only learn in a performance reducing manner. Which is why some people regularly fill with good quality fuel and reset the ECU. It's also why they feel the livliest straight after the battery's been re-connected, which you may have noticed yourself.

300zx knock controller test. Three short video clips.

Runs one and two, same conditions. Run three, lowered boost about 1 to 1.5 psi, resulting in less knock retard, as expected.

Another run (not shown), timing was retarded three degrees in the ECU, eliminating knock retard.

All runs, no audible knock in headphones, yet the controller responded correctly.

I know Derek Jones from Racetech Developments, Towcester since 1984
At the time an engine builder at JQF who`s hobby was electronics and one off the pioneers
Over the years we had some conversations were he explained me how these electronics worked. On the subject Knock control he said ( years ago) Its very difficult to implement,
There are many sensors for specific engines / applications , you need to run the engine into detonation to have data, but if you change for instance a camshaft, that can make the pattern look completely different…so you need to do it all over again…its not something you drop on and ready…….

Derek Jones has not completely thought through the problem.

A good detector scheme will allow for engine modifications and work on many applications.

Autronic is now offering a knock module that allows for routine engine changes:

There is the last years more focus on things like knock control, lean burn , direct injection , etc
and there is now more knowledge that results in new products and yes they work...
Most affordable aftermarket ECU manufacturers choose NOT to offer active knock control, some are knock monitoring...because its not as plug and play, you need to do your homework ..and yes Autronic and Motec M800 ( and others) offer systems but only for well known engines ,(Subaru / Mitsubishi )
We need to make some difference between OEM/ big budget engine development
and someone that build an engine on a budget and spend a few hours on the dyno for mapping and tweaking ... and in that respect, Derek`s words still stand ...after many years
