For a brief period of time I own a Mk1,Mk2 and Mk3 GTI! Picked up a Mk1 today, full nut and bolt rebuild from the ground up! Been after one since I was 17! Owned a Mk1 LS instead because of insurance, went into numerous Mk2s but always wanted a Black or Lhasa Green Mk1. Sold the Mk3 and awaiting a few parts for it before I let it go. The MK2 has been a long term project, no expense spared but It was not going to get done anytime soon! Too many DIY projects at home and a Springer Spaniel to walk means time runs out quickly at weekends! I do have a Mk2 rolling shell that will be posted up for sale soon!
