I've been a bit confused when researching the TSI/FSI motors , Wiki tells me the smaller ones are alloy blocked , and the 1.8/2.0 is Cast Iron? Is this so? I thought I read here they were all alloy blocked.

AFAIK the naturally aspirated engines all have alloy blocks (1.4, 1.6, & 2.0 FSI) while the turbo'd efforts have a conventional iron block (twin charged 1.4 and turbo'd 2.0).

that sounds about right, cast iron has the added strength

I'm not sure on the 2L FSI, Think that also cast iron - need to have a look

Sounds interesting.. be careful with the alloy blocks as (certainly the small block 1.4 flavours) have an appalling rep for strength, and VAG view them essentially as disposible items since they're prone to warp if the crank is removed (crankshafts are listed on ETKA as "Not replacement part").

It appears that the small block 1.6 engines might be a bit better (replacement crank listed) and I'm not sure about the 2.0 efforts as my version of ETKA is too old to list them.

Were you thinking of building an NA or turbo lump?

Turbo is for diesels! oh, and driving Gods like the Reeves.. of course... 2.0 N/a , ITBs or Bike T/Bs , cams if they're sensibly priced by the time the engine build happens , and the usual clubman bits.

The 1.8T ALT is an engine were they tried some things before going FSI
(head ladder frame , balance shafts, alloy block )
the next step was then going FSI head

N.A FSI > alloy block / TFSI > steel block
TSI is a complete other engine

ALT 20V and N.A FSI 2.0 use the same block

Alloy blocks, various capacities and architecture

Thanks for posting those prof, likewise HPR and others for clarification:thumbup:

The following was gleaned from other threads, correct if need be:

AEH, AKL (8v), APF, AVU (8v), BAG, BLF, and BLP are 1598cc alloy FSI blocks unless otherwise noted

    - - any 1781cc alloy blocks out there?

ADR, ALT (20v), AXW, BLR, BLX, BLY, BVY, BVX, and BVZ are 1984cc alloy FSI blocks unless otherwise noted

Other info on "VW alloy blocks - what are the origins?" thread:clap:

AEH, AKL and AVU are big block style 1.6's, with X-flow heads and ally blocks, they were all available without FSi in cars as early as the mk4 Golf.
