Hi, There is alot of oil in various boost pipes and intercooler and was wondering what the cause was? And the cure? Engine is currently out (which is how i found out) so ideally want this sorted before refitting. Done some research, some people claim its common...others do not? Will it cause damage to keep running it with the oily boost pipes? Cheers
A light covering oil can be caused by the crank case ventilation system which I believe runs back into the intake near the airbox on the 1.8t. Most of this will be sucked in when the engine is driven hard though. If it is alot of oil it could be turbo oil seals leaking.
and if there is a leak in the pcv system it will be pulling loads of extra air and therefore oil mist
+1 Some pics would be good though, since `a light covering` could be pretty subjective. You might think it`s a lot, but it might be fine.
That looks like oil coming from the breather. Re-route your breather pipes to an external oil catch tank.
I`d go with that... Doesn`t look massively excessive like you would see if it was a failed/failing turbo seal. In that case, you`d expect to see the entire inside of each pipe coated.
As said certainly seems like just the breather letting oil into pipes. How long has it been running those pipes? Excessive blowby on the piston rings can cause higher crankcase pressures causing extra oil to be forced into the pipework too. Although I wouldn't be too worried if the car hasn't been using oil excessively. How is the car generally driven most of the time mostly before it was taken apart though.
Pipes I'm guessing have been on a good few years. Engine was in a mark2 when i removed it, so no doubt has been driven ethuastically
If they've been on for years I wouldnt worry, unless being custom pipes someones deleted the crankcase venting into the intake already.
