My 1990 mk2 gti 16v has been making a whining noise when reving which I have narrowed down to the alternator. My question is, can the alternator be serviced or do I need to buy a new one? Cheers

If you're sure its the alternator itself at fault and your quite good at swingin' spanners etc then you can get them apart and inspect and replace the bearings yourself. There's a guide here http://www.swdubs.co.uk/alt1.htm which has some good info in detail.
