I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the engine section, but plumbed for here to start with.

I want to get my 95 VR6 golf remapped.
I've emailed both AMD and Stealth for quotes.

Stealths quote was an extra 25+VAT.
    The mail said
"The remap will be 375+vat, this will take form of a Unichip unit"

Who has had their VR6 chipped at either of these places?
    Any comments/opinions?

I have no problems paying a little extra if Stealth is significantly better.

I think I'm right in thinking my ClubGTi membership gives me a discount at AMD so it's even cheaper.

    Cheers for any pointers.

Dunno about the details but I trust Stealth down the line with the VR6.

AmD if you've got a Mk4 turbo type VAG powerplant or later.

In my experience Stealth seem to look after older cars whereas AMD prefer newer ones.

Also have a read of this post

So does a Mk3 qualify as older or newer ?
Somewhere in the middle I'd say.

They have both quoted for the work so I don't think there's any worries there.

I'd say the Mk 3 is in the old category now but if AMD have given you a quote then there doesn't appear to be any problem

Have they given you any estimates of power gains because that's the important thing really isn't it [:D]

Both provide excellent customer service so if there's only 25 in it I'd go with whichever will give you the most increase in power.

No estimates of power gains no.
I'm more concerned with having it set up properly to work with the K&N filter and exhaust I have on it
to be honest, as well as some more lower down oof.... ;)

Stealth for me. I don't know what AmD were quoting for, but the Dastek Unichip thing that Stealth have quoted me for (at the same price) is a remappable unit too. :)

i was thinking of getting mine chipped but ive heard from a few people that the results were dissapointing. 375 + vat is lot of money at the end of the day

I seem to remember someone saying that the guy who does the remapping at Stealth used to work for AmD.

Dunno if thats true or rollocks.

You do know that a Unichip is no the same as an ECU remap, but a plug in box? Read about it on the Dastek site.

    I do now!
    Cheers for the info.
Do you know if there's a noticeable difference between the two methods?
Or if one is better than the other for some reason?

The difference will be down to the mapper/tuner. The Unichip is much more flexible if you are doing more tuning eg adding NOS, turbo etc etc, multiple maps. New ones apparently due out imminently. Can also take away and use on another car

as edc says, I think the unichip can be re-mapped for cheap if you plan to mod in future.

I heard a rumor tha unichips are coming off the market soon though, anyone confirm this?

    Have always used AMD

Know a few people with VR6's that have had remaps there and will tell you that they are happy with them.

AMD do still look after there old customers who have "old cars" tehy are still happy to roll my mk2 for me
