Obviously there will always be people that sell their cars cheaply for whatever reason, legitimately I'm sure. But in my experience having bought and sold quite a few, I've found you normally get what you pay for.

if the car has a cult following and is desirable then the prices will be kept high. the mini scene is like this, its hard to find any mini under a grand thats even half road worth now, Ive seen sheds changing hands for 1k! I will hold my hands up though and admit to being part of this, I paid 4k for my old mini in 2004 with 28k on the clock as it was the right one, and the price wsnt too bad (I then sold this last summer admitadly after spending another grand or so on it, an putting 20k on it, for 3500)

But I have also done it in the golf world, I paid 2200 for my mk1, with ok body work but it had a new engine which I wanted and a few other bits that I would have brought anyway.

I know a couple of people who have gone from mk1s to mk2s as they want something a little newer but still has that old car feel...while beeig a bit more comfortable. plus as mk1 prices go up and up people will look for the next best thing.

not really, 24k a year isn't exactly having money grow out of your *arses as you so nicely put it is it? I just see people strapping themselves up for finance on new cars at ridiculous amounts per month and think that for people like us that would rather genuinly have a mk2, then for the price of a month (or two's) salary they are a bargain....

    ^True.
I really don't get the whole 300-a-month to drive a Focus ST thing. You could take out a loan and be driving a 964 Carrera for similar money if the really wanted to impress people.
Better yet, don't borrow any cash at all and buy an older BMW, Merc or VW...

Mk2s are only expensive if you look for them in "the scene"...Anyone who looks for them in the real world knows that they are currently very cheap cars

I reckon that at the moment they are as cheap as they will ever be, and anybody with a load of spare money and an empty warehouse should buy as many as they can and sell them in 5 years time for a tidy profit....

Absolutely agree with this chap if your looking for one in the scene you generally pay more for one than say out of the autotrader or local paper ,although there are bonuses for each scenario. There are a lot of decent MK2 gti still out there and in my experience the good ones normally turn up on notice boards or places you wouldnt normally look.I have had loads of MK2 GTIs and they have all been under a grand to buy, really clean and generally reliable think the biggest expense I ever had with my second one was rear axle bushes but then thats an age related thing I might just be lucky but I dont think so you just have to view a few shonky trumps before the ideal one comes along.
Start collecting/hiding as many as you can without the missus knowing because I reckon they are going to go the same way as mk1s and air colled stuff as they become more collectable, ka-ching.

I dont really understand why people cant see the reason why the Mk2 golf GTI has retained its value/appeal, especially when you consider some of the other rubbish (potentially controversial) that has like Mini's and Ford escorts etc..

Its a design classic that is still one of the best cheap drivers cars you can buy. Most car jornos would surely rate the mk2 golf 16v in the top 3 hot hatches of all time.

    Cheers

Both my mk2s cost around 400, both immaculate inside, the first one (a 3 door) just needed a spot of t cut and a new door the second one (5 door) has a couple of spots of surface rust on a couple of scrapes, it also needs a new rear bumper. All very cheap to fix so there are bargains to be had. As I have it insured on a classic policy (200 fully comp), its cheaper for me to drive this than a 1300 mk2 :) My main car is a Scenic, so as you can imagine it is a very cheap way for 'Dad' to have some fun. If I had a couple of grand going spare I wouldn't have a problem dropping it all on a mint mk2, IMO they are the perfect run around.

they are such a timeless shape... i like mk1's, but in my opinion mk2's are a better all round car. I think most people on here that are actual true GTI enthusiasts wouldn't have any problem spending a fair few k on one... i know I wouldn't

The introduction of the Mk2 was a big leap forward in terms of brakes, switchgear and general comfort over the Mk1, but performance, because of weight increase was slightly reduced. That said most would agree the Mk2 is the best driving of all the Marks.

    Rather liking this.
Fairly priced, but I'm not quite ready to buy.
I'd even keep the roof-rack on...
