If you think they're covered under house & contents then you may be mistaken. Following a burglary from my garage, I've discovered that one item that was stolen is not covered: A compression tester. It turns out that specific tools for use on a car can be considered car accessories by some overzealous underwriters and thus not part of your contents insurance. So this could mean any form of diagnostic equipment, jacks, cranes & hoists, any specialist tools in other words. I'm in the process of arguing with a series of call-centre drones on the semantics of what is an accessory, but it could well be the case that a lot of people out there are not covered when they think they are. Might be worth checking out when you renew.
keep going.. from exp it does work. ok its boring retelling the same script to all and sundrie but i promise repetition pays off. DO NOT stop till you get what you are owed.
Mine are. I'm with a specialist car insurer who also does house insurance. All my policies are linked. (5 cars and house) The house and contents policy has this inclusion. I've increased the coverage on that section as I've got a pretty well equipped workshop. I'm in Australia, so I'm not sure how useful this information is to UK residents but it shows that at least some companies are capable of making the inclusions. My insurer is http://www.shannons.com.au/ They've also got some good policies for cars that aren't driven on the road. My race car for example is insured against theft and any damage it might incur when being transported to and from events, as is my tandem trailer. (Damage on the track is obviously not covered) It's only about AU$100pa.
