Anyone had to pay a licensed asbestos firm to remove the soffits from their house? Need a rough idea of cost. Have phoned a few firms in the yellow pages but they all want to do a test before giving out any kind of price (recession I guess). I just want a ball park figure so I can negotiate a price. It'll need scaffolding putting up and I know that has to be of a specialist type as well so can prove costly.

Currently going through the process of buying a house and the survey has come back saying that the soffits are asbestos, ok if left alone but if we want to put meet the up to date standards for loft insulation, then we need to make extra ventilation i.e drilling holes in the soffit boards.

    Any ideas peeps

    Thx

Speak to your local Council they will have their own Abestos removal unit and will do it FOC.

do you know what type of asbestos it is?

as said, it's fine until it's disturbed.

My local council won't even take it at the dump, let alone remove it FOC. So it just gets dumped in a hedge by most people, or hidden in bags and put in with the rubbish.
If you drill it wet you'll be perfectly safe, cordless drill and lots of water.
I'd rather keep asbestos soffits than stick in anything else TBH - asbestos sheeting lasts forever, the back panelling at TSC island is made of it and shows no signs of degrading after 100 years! And it really holds paint well, stuff just never flakes off...

I took loads to my local tip, the woman looked at it and said 'Thats fine, put it in the yellow asbestos bin'. That was a garage roof that I took.

They won't touch it around here so I'll be burying it in the garden or doing what the builders do and dumping it as close to the tip as they dare but at the side of the road then running off.

The council/coal board used it on their houses so they should pay for it's disposal.

What the other bloke said. Asbestos sheeting isn't generally dangerous, so long as you're not breaking it up. You shouldn't need men in white suits and a clean / dirty trailer thing really.
