When you make your sub box make sure you place some accoustic wadding in the back and smooth out the lines in the enclosure. To make it simple it will eliminate upper harmonic distortion and really tigten up the sub response and give you a lot better sound. Its used in most pro installs and you can get it from maplins quite cheaply.

In respect of your pioneer sub the volume of the box will be around 1 cubic foot for a sealed enclosure not taking into account the displacement from the cage and driver.

One final tip is when you seal the box if you use silicon (nasty) make sure you don't put the sub in the box until it's set. Silicon gives off acetic acid when it cures and it's quit harmful to foam surrounds. What GTiwale is spot on and it's those little extra touches that make a great sounding box.

    Good luck with your install!

wadding will lower the tuning frequency as it gives the sub a bigger box feel
as for smoothing the box etc it will increase spl but raise the tuning on sq
