The black wire goes from the starter to the + terminal seen here -

The wire in the black tape is the extra wire with the two pin plug on the end going to D+.

    So its -

    * Black wire from starter to + terminal on the battery
    * Red wire from starter to alternator
    * Blue exciter, lengthened from battery side to the D+, with a 2 pin plug on the end.

    Thats it!!

I spliced that into the blue exciter wire, which had a 2 pin plug on it, then plugged it into the alternator (D+), making sure the right pin was connected.

maybe swap the blue wire to the other pin, only 1 of the 2 pins is correct

Definitely the correct one, as when i remove the plug the light on the dash goes completely out when the engine is running.

yeah, but try the other pin on the alternator. the blue wire needs to go to one of the 2 pins ;)

The alternator is properly earthed? Ie you've not painted all the brackets etc such that it's actually not earthed via the block as factory?

You know what Andy, i actually have painted the alternator and the bracket [:$]

This could be the actual cause then. Cheers for spotting that

The block isn't painted though but i did hammerite the alternator and the brackt.

Where abouts should i sand the paint off then ? The rear of the alternator and the bracket ?

    Cheers

You just need continuity where the brackets touch, upper and lower bracket point in the pic, and then obviously make sure the bracket touches the block, so it can earth via the block earth strap.

Just got back and still no luck [8(] Just a solid red battery light when the engine is running.

I sanded down all the brackets making sure there was good contact throughout.
Even tried the other pin and no joy!

Its got to be the alternator then.

Is there any other alternator's from any other engine which will fit ?

    Cheers.

Take the Alterntor out of your MK4 thing and replace with the suspect alternator.

Start and observe exciter light (Batt symbol) action. If it goes out on the MK4 then your MK2 wiring requires reinspecting.

Alternators, in terms of physical dimentions are very similar for 1.8T and 16v motors. I have a 20vT unit on my 16vT.

Try this ( which you should have attempted on Saturday) and then you are ready for the next steps.

PS Exciter wire always is on "D+" for a Golf 2.

Here is a and example of the connector and where the wire needs to be. This was made up for a Golf 2 installation over the weekend.

I was thinking of doing this Edd, but i dont want to ruin anything on the MK4 as its my daily, and i'd be screwed without it [8(]

I'll have to try and get hold of another unit and see what happens from there.

Eddie, are the 20v turbo alternators on an AGU (06X block?) the same fitment as the type found on ABFs with the spring loaded serpentine tensioner / air con mounting bracket?
Probably have that type here if they are.

The mounting positions are the same. Believe the alternator fixing points are fixed by the supplier (Bosch/Valeo) and brackets are designed and cast up to suit what the OEM requires.
