Pay by cheque if you can, get in your car drive to your bank cancel the cheque, when they contact you give them a full run down of the cost of the parts they used + labour and tell them you will be sending them a new cheque for the new amount

Owning a Mk2 requires DIY maintenance, not getting shafted with prices like that ffs.
Plenty on here didn`t even pay that for the purchase of their cars.

So I pay by cheque and then cancel it straight away - and then I tell them what I'll pay them?! surely I wouldn't get away with that would I? Or do I ask them to re-assess their prices?

i wouldn't, I'd discuss it with them first and ask just why its so bloody high.

putting my caddy through its last MOT was a lot cheaper than that and required more work.

Is it true that if they're doing the cambelt the rocker cover gasket would literally be no work at all, as in none? If so, I'm f***ing annoyed now. The weird thing I can't understand is that this place was recommended to me by several other Vee-dub owners!

If I got quotes from other garages for exactly the same work but much less and sent these to trading standards do you think I would stand a change of getting some money back?

    Appreciate your comments guys

    Yes you would,

    1. you are still paying them for work carried out (you are not refusing to pay them)

    2. You will have a full run down of the proper costs (what it should of cost)

    3. If they want to take it to court, they will have to prove that what they charged you is fare (and it is not)

    4. We all know they are taking the pi##

I would just pay it!! I don't think you have really been ripped off!

Like you said your car has been looked at properly and jobs taken care of. Stamp in the service book and knowledge that someone who knows what they are looking at has serviced/repaired your car to a standard they are happy with.

Its not as simple as people would have you believe - but you could do it for yourself if you put your mind to it. Having said that some DIY mechanics can sometimes just make their own cars more dangerous from there attempts at homefixing things!

Are you joking? At the prices OP has said for hourly labour and my own experience of what things cost, they've quoted easily over 10 hours labour for 5 hours worth of work (tops, including 5 tea breaks, 10 fags, a trip to the shop for the bits, a re-visit to get the right bits, lunch hour, 3 p*sses, a sh*t, a post-lunch nap...!). The work is every bit as simple as people are making it out to be!!! He's getting the buttf*cking off a lifetime!

if youre in kent try GMS in maidstone.

GMS ltd, Gibraltar La, Maidstone - 01622 676786

ive had good service from them and they were nearer 30 p/h

but DIY is defo the way to go, full service history is a waste of time on these, a folder of reciepts for parts and an enthusiast owner is much better IMO

900+ is outrageous- i bought a donor car, rebuilt the engine with all genuine parts inc luding a new clutch, bearings, rings, etc and it didnt cost that much

im sure you could have used someone on here , say give them 50 petrol money , 150 or so for a days work and everyones a winner

theyre all basic jobs that any confident diy'er can do

stamp in the service book on a 20 yr old car doesnt mean alot to people with any sense

and, the important thing is, its work theyll be familiar with.

i was at the vw dealer the other day and the people who worked there was having a laugh at a customer who had brought a mk3 in for servicing, they hadnt seen one in for god knows how long and i doubt anyone really knew the car that well, something like a mk2 is going to be even worse

a golf pervert from on here would do it better
