what shall i do first? its an '87 mk2 8v.

presumably first would be K&N panel filter and drill the air box with cold air feed.

    what next?

any decent mods that can be done for not much dosh?

knock the intake trumpet out of the airbox and see if that gives you a bit more growl at WOT without drilling it. It will still draw cold air from the headlight cowl as it was intended but it derestricts it slightly from what I'd heard....

The cheapest power increase on them has to be a 2.0 block, then get the head done later.

The important thing is to get it to breathe...

Panel filter, decent S/S exhaust with 4 branch manifold & a fast road cam are all relatively affordable.

If the rest of the engine is in good shape you can expect to release a genuine 10BHP from these mods.. :p

A 2L bottom gives plenty of torque, but no great gain in BHP unless you go for big valves & hot cams..(Big s)

An 1800 with a flowed head & cam will give just as much peak BHP as a 2L with standard valves...

For max power/torque per money ratio, go nitrous.

Stick the 2l lump in, then flowed head and manifolds. Filters aren't that different except for better sound. Then get it remapped. Forget power figures - feel the torque!

Personally I think you are just throwing money away with modding an 8v engine with exhausts filters drilled airboxs etc etc, no one but the manufacturers seem to claim gains.

If is lower miles & good nick & a digifant you can chip 'em but not many left like that anymore.

Unless you are planning on spending serious wedge on the engine with incresed capacity etc etc I say set it up to stock & leave it, sort the suspension instead.

I got to agree but chipping a digi wont do much without any serious mods anyhow. Increasing capacity doesnt have to be expensive for noticable gains when compared to the 300 or so you could spend on a big fat exhaust and a noisey cone filter.

right then, first on the list is:-

    loose the door reflectors :p

    engine wise:-

k&n panel filter with drilled air box and cold air feed

    then

    cam

    then

    head work

    then (maybe)

    2l bottom end

    (just been serviced btw)

remember to go for 35mm exhaust valves if/when you go for headwork...

    You wont regret it [:D]
