    I should explain that I don't actually own a Golf GTI yet, but I have been trawling through the ads seeing what is available.

    Basically I am in the market for a Mk2 16v, and a lot of the cars seem to have lowered/modded suspension, so I was wondering what people think is the best suspension package, or is standard best?

    The favourite seems to be the Koni-Eibach combination, is this the ultimate?

    Do Bilsteins work well?

    Lastly, what is the optimum drop just for handling as opposed to looks?

    Thanks for any help;

    Go about 10mm past standard 16v for handling... best setup depends on a) IT's use (track only, Rally, road, mixed) b) your budget.

    For a cheap setup Koni/Eibach works well
    For an average outlay i have no complaits with Spax coilovers, other options are FK Kinigsport coilover
    For muchos money you are looking at 1000 a corner Ledes or similar!

    Thanks mate,

    I see from your website that you rate the Eibach ARBs as well.

    Anybody got any experience of Bilsteins on the Mk2 16v?

    ARB's are the god-send of MK2 handling mods.

    ChrisP used to use Bilstein fixked shox.. as does a mate of mine. They are very very good kits. Them and a set of ARB's and you will be smiling... a lot!

    Regardless of whether the suspension is any good or not you should ask some questions as to its ab/use and how many miles it has done. There's no point paying extra for a car with some nice Konis if they went on 100k ago.

    Ed,

    Agreed, I reckon that a set of shocks should last about 60k miles.
