I've got half a tank of fuel I want to get out of a tank. Whats the best way? Can I remove the lines from the fuel filter and use the in-tank pump to pump it out? If so what would be the best way - battery wired directly to the pump?

Yup - use the lift pump. Unplug the main pump, and bridge the fuel pump relay.

    its a mk3, there is only 1 pump ;)

but yeah, pop the feed line off the filter and direct the line into a bucket, bridge relay and wait patiently

It was that and a greasy road that has left me with this predicament. [:$]

OK, It's been a long while and who knows how useful the petrol will be by now but I'm going to empty my old tank tomorrow/saturday. I plan on chopping the wiring and offering up a battery direct to the fuel pump. Not looked yet as the car is at a mates but which wire is the live feed and which is earth?

Thread resurrection or what. :o Fuel will be off by now!

Good for the mower though. ;)

Just bridge out the fuel pump relay.

There's about 30 worth to get out. Wish I'd done it sooner but hopefully it will still be OK for chainsaw/parts cleaner or the odd litre in the GFs car! I could do with knowing which wires because the car was imobilised but that is now out so I doubt the pump will run by bridging the relay.

Be careful chopping the wires to the pump - obviously you don't want any sparks.. shame to wreck the pump / loom too.

Take it you're breaking the car - when I did my Mk2 I took the tank out, sat it on the top of the dead car and syphoned the fuel straight into the tank of my new one

Funny pic that! No chance of sparks as the batery is currently in my shed about a half mile away from the tank:lol:.

The car is pretty much broken and can't be arsed salvaging the loom. Was going to chop the loom before the connector to the pump so I can retrieve the pump intact.

Just need to know which wire is which.

    Screwdriver and a hammer! [:$]

Yesterday I had to drain 50 litres of petrol from a diesel tank on a civic in the snow. We've got a little siphon made from an electric fuel pump and a pipe attached to each end, just take a spare battery with you and a few big jerry cans.

Jerry can you don't want, drill two holes.

One pipe goes from bottom of tank to one hole in the can and the other pipe at the top of the can and you suck.

Then the petrol goes straight into the can and you can stop sucking. I made two holes in the lid which obviously is changable cause I had to suck an emergancy gallon of diesel out at night and didn't fancy a mouthful.
