Hi Guys... over the past 2 months ive been piecing together a car rig! Based on the Automotiverig.com design..... but i wasnt going to pay the 750USD (PLUS import) when i could make one myself!

    Here are the FLICKR pictures.

And heres the progress thread over at UKMKIVS

As you can see its VERY nearly finished.... just a few bits to be drilled and then its good to go!! :)

Let me know what you think!!

    Awesome,

    I'd love one of these...

Just out of intrest, what do you set the camera at to get shots like that - its something I always seem to fail on...

I think the settings were F22 0.6sec with a ND filter on! Need a higher stop ND filter really!

Yes... but its a doddle to PS out as unlike suction rigs it leaves hardly any reflections on the body work!

do you use continues focus? or lock the focus before hand? looks good even on a little modest polo!!! I still find it odd that there is little to stop it twisting but obv works

When we did a mag feature with the mk1 we had the photographer in the back of an open top car with the camera at the end of a boom which he would hang out of the back of the car & snap away at various angles. had some good pics (and no boom to ps out ;) ).

I would post a link up of the results to give you some ideas of angles but just noticed that multiply has deleted them all [:x] .

I used normal auto focusing, with a wireless shutter release! Drove the car in reverse at about 1mph and released the shutter from in the car!

The T clamp that goes around the pole to holds it to the fixing clamps seem to work ok... It would be a bit of a strain at a bigger angle but for now it works as well as i need it to! And bare in mind that ATM the two poles under the car are not fixed solid... so once that is drilled and pinned BOTH the T clamps will be preventing rotation!

But there are shots that this rig can produce that are impossible to do with the above setup!

    Rolling shots FTW tho... [:D]

what do you mean, the boom you have or the one we used at the time?

not picking any fault with yours as it is great, just that we did it with the boom in the following car that's all.

I mean that for instance you couldn't use the "leading car" method for a shot like this...

...unless both drivers are synchronised perfectly!

it also allows for much longer shutter speed potential as the camera is connected directly to the chassis!

Better pictures are to follow.... ill be shooting a jazz blue golf mk4 with air ride and porsche 964 split rims very very soon so watch this space!

Ill like to see those rollings shots... see if you can locate them!!
