I'm currently insured with admiral and looking to buy a cheap second car to use as a daily driver over winter. I don't want to SORN my current car (MK2 Golf GTI) but it will be covering less miles and no business use (I use it for everything at the moment). I was hoping admiral could explain the cheapest way for me to insure two vehicles, but after half an hour on the phone at 25p a minute and two numptys later ("Is your car a Golf 8 vee or a Golf 16 vee, sir?") I was quoted 500 more than my existing policy...

So for those of you who buy a banger for winter to sell on again in spring, what's the best way to do it? I'm wondering if I should try get my GTI on a separate classic policy with a different company - however after winter I will be using it for work again...

    Ta!

I was quite shocked when I went to insure a 3rd car that my insurer at the time applied my 9years NCB to the 3rd car and so ask them if they would do this? Did they suggest anything like this ?

    Hi the loop,

I know this is a bit of a belated reply (due to Greenlight just sponsoring a section of the forum), but your question is a good one and relevant to most members.

When you're looking to run an everyday vehicle and a cherished vehicle, we would suggest covering the everyday (presumably non-performance) daily driver with a mainstream Insurer using your actual NCB upon that vehicle. With admiral being a mainstream Insurer they should be able to accommodate the everyday car as a change of vehicle under their policy.

You'll then need to source cover for your MK2 Golf Gti, which a specialist Insurance provider (someone like us ;) ) will be able to do by mirroring the equivalent percentage discount for your No Claims Bonus (NCB) earned under your other policy to the policy with us. We'll be allowing an introductory discount that gives you credit for your driving ability and the NCB you've earned under your other policy.

In addition to this, if you're able to limit your annual miles you'll receive a big discount for this.

If you've not done so already, the best way to go would be to estimate the annual miles you'll be covering with your Golf and select what you feel to be an ample policy mileage limit to start with. You will be able to top up the mileage under your policy to a higher limit in the event your circumstances change and you need to cover more miles during the year.

We wouldn't suggest a classic car policy for this, as it's too restrictive and will not usually be able to accommodate opening the mileage up during the year. Most classic policies also require you to have a 2nd everyday vehicle present at all times, meaning you would have to cancel the classic policy and reinsure your MK2 Golf GTi to include work/main use when you sold the run around.

Our option of a limited mileage, specialist policy would provide you a competitive price based upon a low annual mileage, which could then be topped up to include more miles or commuting when you need it. This would save any of the costs associated with cancelling a classic car policy mid-term.

Anyway, hopefully you've managed to sort cover out by now. But in the event you still need a hand, we'd welcome the chance to help

    Kind regards

    Tony
