I'm having a strange issue on my mk2. After fitting a new brake master cylinder and new booster (358612107B), I found that that the clevis/rod from the booster was alot shorter than the original and I struggled to connect it to the pedal. I would say I have had to wind the clevis on 3 or 4 turns maximum on to the rod from the booster, and even at that I had to pull the rod back towards the pedal to connect it. Has anyone come across this issue before. Are there longer clevis's available? The reduced length is just barely touching my brake light switch, and is causing my brake lights to come randomly. The image below is not mine, I am just including it for context.
Is it for a LHD? I seem to recall the pushrods are different lengths depending on whether LHD or RHD but there are more knowledgeable people on this site
I had thought that alright, but the LHD ones seem to have the clevis piece welded on, and no adjustment.
7zap gives the lengths of the various LHD/RHD/ different engine code types, if you measure yours might be able to see if it matches what it should be or not?
Thanks for the suggestion, but it's the first place I checked. Only one size available for the booster. I'll take the clevis out and measure it though to be sure. I'm pretty sure the clevis is my original one as well.
One thing that just popped into my head. I must check if the booster is fully bolted in or that there isn’t something snagged in between it and the bulk head.
Was thinking more if it wasn't the length 7zap states you could see if it more closely matches some of the others. When you say new do you mean brand new? Though that's no guarantee it was boxed / labelled correctly.
Just ran out and checked. Booster is bolted up good and tight. Label on the booster shows correct part number. I’ll measure the booster rod length and the Clevis tomorrow and go from there. The clevis that I have fitted could well be wrong, this car was a parts bin monstrosity when I got it.
Have you reset your brake light switch after fitting the new MC?. I adjusted the free play but it also required resetting and refitting the switch. They are self adjusting.
Ah FFS, let's just delete this thread and pretend nothing happened..... Fair play @KeithMac, you were right. I had assumed the brake pedal needed to return to its resting position, and that the clevis should be wound out to meet it. This is incorrect. The clevis should be set so that the pedal height is inline with the other two pedals. The brake switch should then be extended out and set against the pedal. Brake pedal resting higher than the others: Brake switch before extending: And extended:
@davkav , I was in exactly same position mate after rebuilding my car. Glad to see you got it sorted .
