Was there a different coolant flange on the side of the head for different 1.8T engine codes ?

    Cheers

I can remember looking at these on three agu engines. They all had the rounded connection. May depend on age though

The green one should fit your AGU fine, the square one is for mk3 based cars (about 1996/7) but it will be plain enough when you look at the loom.

My AGU uses the square type one. When i changed mine last year i recieved the round one, which of course was the wrong one so i had to send it back and get the square one instead.

Febi Bilstien are OE suppliers to VAG, the one i got last year wasn't Febi and it sucked, my engine was pants when it was cold and drinks like a fish until it was hot (also idled high while cold). I ordered one of the Febi ones and Roberts your mothers brother, problem solved. She now runs, idles and drinks like she should.

the original blue ones were dodgy, but new ones you buy from vw will be ok as they'll have fixed the design issues. apart from that its just a different shape sensor/plug depending on the age. if you really want to you can pop the pins out of the plug and swap between if you like,.

if you want an additional sensor fitting i think if you order a 1.8t aircon specific flange of some kind it'll have a sensor fitting. pretty sure its in the elbow one you show above as im sure i have seen mk4 era cars with a sensor in there

The black square ones 058919501A were fitted to many early vehicles with cable throttles and a M3.8.3 controller.
E-Gas (ME7.X) vehicles switched to the 'D' shaped unit 078919501C which was later superceded by the green unit 059 919 501A.

I have had issues with the latter sensor when fitted to our Bora 170PS V5. The cluster temp gauge would display overheating and a fault for 'G2' would be logged when scanned with VAGCOM in 'instruments'. Replacing with a smiliar sensor from the dealer has cured the issue thus far.

If you are using a ME7.x ECU then you want any of the D types.
If you are using a M3.8.3 system you want the square type.
If you are using a SEM it does not matter.
In fact half of the sensor (G2) is for the later cluster's temp gauge, meaning if the NTC curve for the in G62 is similar to an old 2 pin sensor, you are replace the sensor with a similar NTC curved 2 pin unit from say a VR6 or similar base diameter.

Cheers for the info Eddie

The engine im using is an AGU 1.8T with cable throttle, but unsure of what year it is ?

As far as i know, most AGU engines are early examples of the 1.8T, so i may need the M3.8.3 system which uses the square type ?

Is there any easy way in telling what one i have ?

Come to think of it, my AGU engine came with a later type cam cover ( which i have changed for the original AGU square bolt down type), so maybe aftermarket management or a later wiring loom may have been used using this large port AGU, which maybe why i have the later type coolant sensor ?

Also, does the coolant flange differ from early AGU's to later AUM's, or will the different coolant sensors fit the same flange ?

you'll know what you need by looking at the loom, you cant mix n match aum and agu looms as ecu connector is different. so match the sensor to the plug on ya loom ;)
