I'm after a cordless drill for general DIY around the home and for drilling self tapping screws into cars etc.

I'm guessing an 18v would be best?

Any suggestions that don't break the bank

Wait for the next time Aldi/Lidl have one on offer - I bought a corded hammer drill from them for about 15 - 800w. Awesome kit for the money.

Or, I've also got a Ryobi One+ cordless drill (and a few other tools). If you think you're going to buy other cordless tools, it's worth the initial outlay.

I also picked up one of those cheapo aldi 240v drills as a spare and so far its been good as a drill and great for the money, can smell abit if I use it for mixing.

Otherwise the makita twin packs are good, both me and my dad have one in 18v and no complaints here thou my dads very old makita did break its gearbox but its had serious use. I also got lent a drill by jewsons which they never had back, its a proper cheap one but has had 100's of hrs use with no problems but no idea who made it but it does go to show cheap tools can be good.

I picked up a Dewalt combo pack - Cordless Drill/Driver (w. charger+2 batts) and corded hammer drill - from B&Q for #99 last summer (sorry no pound sign on damn US keyboards).

I just checked and it's now down to #89

B&Q have makita or hitatchi 18v's with two batteries for 99 regularly and having used dewalt alongside makita and hitatchi for a few weeks I would pick up the hitatchi everytime. But the makita's not far behind.

Makita 18v is the # 1 best 18v drill at the minute. Coming second is the Panasonic. Dewalt have lost it a bit I think.
Make sure its the real deal pro drill from Makita, some brands make a diy version too, I cant remember if Makita do the same.

well lidl have an 18v for 30 quid with 3yr warranty. Would i see any real benefit paying 80 or 90 for a branded one? Don't want to get into trap of false economy and buy twice

Yes Makita have another brand called 'Site' bought what we call a one job wonder Site angle grinder to rake out 100sq/m of brick joints, apart from the gearbox case bolts coming loose its done well and outlasted its one job expectation.
