Does anyone know if this ecu is "normal"? It looks to have 2 blobs of silicon init, and the chip on the top right of the picture is sitting in a carrier, surely this isn't normal? It looks like its been fitted. Any information would be great, only asking as I'm new to corrado's and this is the first time I've taken apart a vw ecu, many thanks

the blobs are to prevent fatigue failure of the solder joints on the heavier components due to vibration.

The chip in the carrier is probably a ROM or something that gets updated more frequently than the pcb design, thus they're inserted on the ECU production line, rather than by the PCB plant.
