Hey, I'm gonna buy a Corrado as i have loved em from afar for a long time but have never got round to getting one. I'm just not sure which one to get, I'm mainly thinking about the 1.8 16v as quite honestly I don't think I can afford to run/Insure and VR6 or G60. Is it worth me getting one of these or are they not really worth it? Little help please!?! Cheers T.
Ignore anyone who sl*gs the 1.8 16V off. (they are the ones with the "same" engine in a crappy Golf shell you see... ). If you've never owned a VR6 or G60 then you'll be find with a 1.8 - fast enough to get banned (done that) but not stupidly fast, won't break the bank on fuel either. You mention not being able to afford to run the other two - if you are worried you can't afford them then don't buy ones as it'll break your heart when you can't afford to keep it running properly. Claypole i have to disagree mate the 1.8 is a bit of a lame duck of a Corrado in my opinion, its fine in the golf as the golf ways an awful lot less than the Corrado but if its all you can afford then thats fine but its not something to get your pulse racing performance wise. Isnt it about 10.5 seconds to 60 which means just about everyone is going to pull your pants down out on the open road? But a Corrado wil always look nice though and i loved my G60
tbh... if i had the choice between a,lets say,180 brake horse g60 and a 180 brake valver,id go for the valver. the g60's dont rev which i dont like, and if you threw a 2.0 16v lump in an 1800 it would go alright. neil.
forget the 1.8 16v, crap for the same money you could get a much newer corrado and go for an 8v. drive them both before you say the 8v is crap......same goes for anyone else who's going to sl*g off the 2.0 8v.
Why does it always come down to being quickest? He's stated he can't afford to run a VR6 and sub 27mpg isn't exactly cheap motoring. He's nothing to benchmark a 1.8 against so he's not about to buy one and think f**k this is poo? I've had a 1.8 and a VR6 and after driving Miss Daisy in a Polo and a 1.6 Scirocco to clean my licence both the 1.8's I have at the minute feel as fast as you could want because I've only a 1.6 carb'd engine to compare them to. Speed only gets you two things, points/bans and empty pockets when you finally realise it's never enough and you can't afford anything that's fast enough? 16V is 8.7secs? 8v is ok if you can find one for sale...
8v's might be a bit basic inside (no rear seat armrest, no height adjustable column etc etc), but at least you'r geatting what is essentially a Vr6 shell. with the wider arches, bulged bonnet, bigger fuel tank and all the other late model goodness (like the better dash and stuff). and you can get them for 2000. sure, rough 16v's start at 900, but you'd pay 1800 for a decent one on a G plate. mine had 137bhp and 140lbs.ft, more grunt than a tired old KR can muster up. It's a no brainer, the 1.8 16v loses outevery time.
Get a VR, trust me, they really are very very nice cars Try Adrian Flux for insurance, I only pay 438 and I'm 24. Edited by: was8v
You were lucky with the 8v Phat. Ive had an 8v first then G60 then 1.8 16v then lastly a 2.0 16v. The 8v had an AMD chip, superprint exhaust and filter and put out 10bhp more at 125bhp. The 8v was by far the least sporty but best build quality. The G60 was the quickest but it was not a well looked after car. Both 16v were not the quickest however they are not as bad as everyone says. Ive never had major problems with any of my cars and the best all rounder I would say is a 2l 16v. Better mid range than the 1.8 and with KR cams reasonably quick. Decent mileage and running costs were ok.
Cheers for all your advice so far, I don't have a problem buying the car and that, I have up to about 3K to spend however my main problem is the fuel costs. I don't want a G60 simply cos I don't have the time to be sitting around sorting out a supercharger when it goes wrong and I dont think I can really handle 23MPG from the VR6! I like the original shape of the Corrados anyway but all i really wanna know is this which 16v should I get 1.8 or 2.0? and does anyone have the actual 0-60 and/or 0-100 times of these two?
You'll get a pretty good 16v for 3K. What I would do is look for one around 2300 and spend the rest on servicing/suspension/engine mods. As I said I think the 2l is the better 16v having had both. Look on www.corrado-forum.net its the best Corrado site by a mile.
aye, should get a nice one for 3k body wise/interior wise... id go for one of the latest 1800 16v's that you can find me self, not much difference in driving them as said, both 136bhp as standard. and it will always have the potential for an easyish 180ish brake horse, and wont need to run a cat convertor or crappy inlet cam. neil.
