Fitted a cam belt to the Golf tonight, anyone who has tackled this job on a mk2 will have cursed those 3 x 6mm allen bolts that secure the water pump pulley.

If you haven't... you need to remove the WP pulley to allow the lower half of the timing belt cover to be removed.

Dave2227 Has been producing a replica of the VW special tool that holds the 3 bolt heads in position whilst you undo them. Works a treat!! :p

Orrrr you could undo them using a 6mm hex socket on a buzz gun ;) Come on Gary, you know air tools had to be the solution

Not much room to work with an air gun I would have thought with engine in position.
Good to see it has been of good use Gary.
Your commission cheque has been posted

That said I remove the pump first as the crank/water pump/alt belt is tensioned by the alt and the crank/water pump/PAS pump belt is tensioned by the PAS pump.

I used to use mole grips to stop the pulley turning, prolly why I used to get through accessory drive belts like they're going out of fashion [:$]

I havent tried doing the cam belt yet as I need a bosch ve diesel pump locking tool as the ve pump runs off the cam belt, unlike the ford 1.8D's that run a seperate belt, the only pic of a VE locking tool I've seen showed the end that sticks out the pulley which looked like a spinny bit at the end of a micrometer.

    VW tool No. 2064 (T02 064 000 00 ZEL)
and VW tool 2065A used to lock camshaft,
    and vw tension guage VW210 (TV0 210 000 00 ZEL)

to remove the water pump on a IDI diesel you practically have to remove the diesel pump, which theres no way I'm going to touch, as these a huge cast iron alt cradle that the water pump bolts go through, the two top bolts are a mare to remove, the left one needs a 13 mm socket on a uj, and I hate using uj's and the right one needs grille, slampanel, bumper and rad removing then dipstick removing and bracket bending out the way, then a deep offset, swan neck or obstruction 13mm spanner to remove the bolt

In the past I just put some hand pressure to tighten the grip on the alternator belt, works for me ;)

Still a handy tool to have in ya box tho :p
