Am new to Mk5 GTI's, but have done a bit of research into engine characteristics/faults etc, and I think it was a thread on here which mentions a 'diesel' like idle sound from the 2.0FSI. Mine seems to suffer from this loud diesel idle noise when warm. Is it anything I should be concerned about or is it just the norm? The car has done 41,000 and if the service history is to be believed, had a cam belt change at 31,500. Any help to put my mind at rest much appreciated.
Think i have seen you post this on the mk5 gti forum. the noise is perfectly normal. sounds rubbish i agree but thats just the way it is.
Yeah I have posted the same on a few forums to get some reassurance. Well, it's a relief, but I must say a bit of a disappointment - who wants a diesel sound from a petrol (just sounds like there's something wrong), especially from a GTI?? I've had better sounding mk2's with 3x the mileage. Still, it's all forgotten about when you dip the loud pedal As Clarkson would say.. "What A Machiiiiiine!!"
Don't say that..... Definitely think it's the standard noise, due to the high pressure fuel rail and possibly cam chain (so I've read). It's only when warm, so guess that would rule out the clutch..?
