I can't get hold of a replacement headlight switch, noone stocks them,
it's not in the VW catalogue and my local scrappy only had the switches
from later models with a different dim-dip circuit (i.e. the 11 pin
    ones again[:^(])

Right, well, the Immobiliser (that didn't work any way) has now
gone...turns out that wasn't letting current flow to the diped beam
circuit once the engine was started I think...I don't know for sure but
its gone now so no problems with that. Have had some re-wiring of the
headlights done, so they now "work", at least when you join the wires
together manually/with a 3rd party switch. So that brings me back
to the dashboard switch...must be that which is faulty, and the garage
that are sorting it (I know, I should do it myself but I am sooo busy
right now) can't seem to source a 9-pin dash switch for it...they are
looking...as am I now. I'm going to go down to the scrappy again
tomorrow and hassle him for one, but if anyone has one spare, then
PLEASE, PLEASE, I'll buy it off of you for a good price!

[Just to check, someone with a mk 2 please do this for me ;),
when you have your dash switch off or in the sidelight only position,
and use the dip-flasher on the steering column, all that happens is
that the lights flash on as you hold it back then off again as you
release it...this is currently what happens with mine, which I THINK is
    correct!]

The C rings a bell, I think that is correct, I believe the 11-pin one
is 191 941 531M, but I will phone the garage tomorrow to check what my
orignina, fubar one has on it as the part number.

The 11 pin one def. doesnt work, I tried one out a while back only to
be greated with smokoe pouring from the switch...it's not just 2 extra
pins, some of them are moved around within the switch.

Thanks, I'll get back to you tomorrow ;)

(Shouldn't your GTI have a 11-pin switch by the looks of the photo?(big-bumper's have them don't they?))

Yeah the light switch was changed sometime around 86 I think, from then on they have an 11 pin switch. The light symbol on the front of it is slightly different too :)

Surley later than that, mine's an '88 and it still has a 9-pin switch
with the symbol of a light buld on it...seen an 11-pin witha
light bulb symbol (from eurocarparts), but I know what you mean with
the changed symbol, its an image of diped beam isnt it!?

Thanks Redi but the Garage have sourced a 2nd hand one for the bargain
price of 5, can't say fairer than that, thanks for looking tho'!

Must be later then I wasn't sure! My '89 Driver had the late 11 pin one and the early 1.3 in my scrappy had the 9 pin one :)

Yeah it looks like a dipped beam symbol or something :)

Are the extra pins due to the introduction of parking lights?

No, never had a car with parking lights either so not gonna miss
them! That reminds me, must rig up a lights on buzzer as I ALWAYS
forget in the golf, but luckily ive only had side-lights up until now
so leaving them on for an hour or so hasn't drained the battery.
I believe there's a thread on here somewhere!

    Let there be light!

Its fixed, at last, all my lights are now working! Just a quick
question tho', when you go onto Main Beam, apart from the centre 2
lights coming on, should the outer 2 (dipped beam) remain lit or
extinguish, as currently mine remain lit!?

They also sorted out some other stuff, like for example the fan used to
come on with the ignition regardelss of engine temperature, now it no
    longer does!

Happy my "baby" is back, as the garage referred to it!

the outers stay lit but using another filament, your car has a 6 filament system, so two in each of the outer lights, one for dipped and one for full beam.

was it the switch or the wiring in the end? having read the thread I feel "involved" somehow ;)

Yes the dash switch was fubar but there were a whole host of other
electrical problems relating to a rather dodgy fitting of an
immobiliser and alarm system, which had been disconnected resulting in
errors relating to my lighting circuit and possibly the radiator fan
circuit. See my post on Enging Fan!
    http://www.clubgti.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=927 55&PN=1

So as you go from dipped to man beam, the outer lights light a
different filament in the same bulb, like H3(?) bulbs then...what's the
point of it lighting a different filament?

The outer lights are H4 bulbs which sre dual function, dipped & main. They have a dipped filament, and a brighter main filament. The spots act as additional lighting :)
Otherwise the lower spec MK2s without the gril spotlamps wouldn't have a main beam at all ;)

I assumed each car would have had different outer lamps...I meant to
say H4, hence the (?) I wasn't sure, i.e. the same as my Saxo
    has!! Drove in
a road rally in that car for the 1st time tonight, completley standard
lights and no replacement loom and they are not that bad to be honest,
bit yellow, but i can cope with that. Dipped by its self is pretty
rubbish though, there's no electronic height adjestment on mine
    either[:^(].

Will up rate the lamps and bulbs and loom as soon as funds become available!

You're talking about bulbs yeah...my acctual lights might need
replacing though as they are looking a bit tatty and as far as I can
tell are the original Hella ones and one of the spots has a chip in
it...no water getting in as of yet though ( I presume as none of the
reflective coating has started to rust)...can always glue it up [:D]. Those Philips ones are 55/60W then if you've not uprated the loom...?
