    ...to dismantle the engine? [:$]

I need my TDi lump out of my front garden ASAP so I want to take it apart bit by bit and litter it around my house. Partly to get it out of the front garden and partly to learn more about engines.

Can I just take the head off without draining the oil? The sump plug isn't very accessible atm...

You can take the head off, but don't tip it over or it will leak oil everywhere.

Aren't TDI lumps worth money... unless they're knackered?

    Thanks.

If I stripped it down to the block and sump, do you think I would be able to carry it without making a mess? [:$]

Yeah but I can't get to the plug! It's leant against a wall on a trolley at about a 45 degree angle! If I try it's just going to fall on its ****.

If you strip all the ancilleries off you should be able to carry the block and sump for a short distance. Although I really wouldn't advise taking it indoors without draining it, even when drained it will still leak oil as you never get it all out. One turn of the crank and you'll have oil on your kitchen floor.

Nah, I'd probably drain it outside once I've stripped it down and can get to the plug easier.

You'll have a job to crack open the head bolts if it not secured to something large, heavy and immovable - say like a car! You'll need at the very least an air ratchet to do this to an engine off the car. That's my experience of two engines anyway.

    It'll p!ss all everywhere too.

Go get yourself a Tesco trolley, cut a small hole in the bottom to access the sump plug, find some mates and lift it in. Then you can move it anywhere you want aswell.

Nah a good breaker bar and you can do it, use a foot on the front of the block to get some purchase. putting the head back on again is tricky but I've done it!

Also, you can easily drain the oil from an engine out the car, by raising the engine onto bricks. You should be able to lever one end at a time onto bricks, and could use an axle stand on the exhaust manifold or something. If I can do a VR6, then you can do a 4 cylinder.

You recon? Last time to had to crack the head bolts on my 16V I had a breaker bar and a long piece of pipe on the end as well as giving it some welly. I thought my car was going to move just before they loosened. The lump was really moving in the bay too. There was no way you could have done this with the engine out of the car - unless I weighed 34 stone and wore lead boots. They'll zip off easy as cake with an air ratchet though - wish i had a garage with tools [:^(]
